The bare-bones house structure at the Gateway Emergency Preparedness Exhibition Center, was built after the 1991 fire and designed by our Alvarado Road neighbor, the architect Peter Scott. It is about to receive an important face-lift to keep up with changing fire safety codes. The original flammable landscaping at the entrance and around the building, has been removed. At the entrance, we will replace it with cobbles and pebbles instead. This is to demonstrate how to achieve compliance with new fire safety regulations. Zone Zero, soon to be required for our Oakland homes, aims to minimize risk of ember ignition. It makes us all safer.
Everyone is invited to both work and celebrate this transformation on Saturday, August 8, between 9-11am. We will need worker bees as well as cheerleaders! We encourage you to bring your teens or older grandkids as well as fit neighbors to help us haul and distribute the stone. Please join us to work and celebrate!
This will be an old-fashioned house-raising just like neighbors used to do for each other in past decades! Homemade apple/walnut muffins will be your reward for your hard work!
